The Great Wall– Trailer vs. Movie #8

As is typical with all my posts, please be aware there are possible spoilers.

The trailer(s) that I watched for this movie are below:

Walking into this movie I wasn’t sure what to expect.  The movie was given pretty poor reviews overall so I didn’t have high hopes.  However I was actually surprised by this movie.  This is a beautifully shot movie and the opening 30 minutes of the film is everything that you could want from it.

This is very much a Chinese style of film.  Much closer in spirit to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon then a traditional American blockbuster.  The movie has style that it never lets go.  While the ending is a interesting battle scene, how we get there is a bit of a mystery that stops this film from being great.  I feel like there is 15-20 minutes of film that was just cut out.  Since there is a large jump in story that doesn’t make any sense.  Maybe there will be a directors cut Blu-ray.

The trailer to the film doesn’t give away any story at all, just shows some of the action, but there is actually a lot of action that it doesn’t show at all, and thankfully none of the ending either.  This is a decent popcorn film, but it was close to being much more.

(10/10 is a perfect rating)

7/10 – Movie Rating

10/10 – Trailer Rating:  The trailer doesn’t give anything away about the plot of the movie.  Also doesn’t show any of the climax of the film.
