Gold – Trailer vs. Movie #33 (-9.7)

As is typical with all my posts, please be aware there are possible spoilers.

The trailer that I watched for this movie is below:

Gold is a film that I really wanted to like.  From the trailer it had a story I could get behind, Mathew McConaughey is a actor that I really enjoy and it seemed to have everything going for it.  The problem is in the execution of the story.

McConaughey transforms into a middle age man desperate to hang on to the past going for broke with his last penny.  The movie just can’t get out of its own way to let the story go.  The pacing at times can be dead on, but there grind to a halt seconds later.  The director tried to tell a story within a story by moving forward and backward in time, but this only becomes confusing the the audience trying to figure out when in time a particular scene is.  The director is trying to be clever trying to hide the climax of the movie, but loses the audience along the way.

The trailer gives away the majority of the plot, unfortunately.  Having scenes and dialogue that may have helped the movie, that are not in the movie at all.

(10/10 is a perfect rating)

6.5/10 – Movie Rating

4/10 – Trailer Rating

End Credit Scene? – No
